Kristi Noem was born on November 30, 1971, in Watertown, South Dakota. She grew up on a farm and ranch in rural Hamlin County, where she developed a strong work ethic and connection to agricultural life. Noem attended Northern State University but left before graduating to help run the family farm after her father's death in a farming accident.
Her political career began in the South Dakota House of Representatives, where she served from 2007 to 2011. In 2010, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming South Dakota's sole representative in Congress. During her time in Congress, she served on the Agriculture, Education and Workforce, and Natural Resources committees.
Noem was elected as South Dakota's first female governor in 2018 and took office in January 2019. She was re-elected in 2022. Her tenure as governor was marked by several notable policies and controversies:
COVID-19 Response: Noem gained national attention for her approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, resisting lockdowns and mask mandates while emphasizing personal responsibility. She argued that South Dakota's approach protected both lives and livelihoods.
Economic Policies: She advocated for tax cuts and business-friendly policies, often citing South Dakota's strong economic performance during her administration.
Tribal Relations: Noem's relationship with Native American tribes in South Dakota became increasingly strained during her governorship.
Despite these controversies, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Noem to serve as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Ahead of her confirmation hearing, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe lifted its ban on Noem and expressed support for her nomination.
Noem has positioned herself as a staunch conservative throughout her political career. She is known for her advocacy of limited government, Second Amendment rights, and pro-life policies. Her political style has been characterized by direct communication and a willingness to take controversial positions.
Her career has been marked by both political successes and significant controversies, making her one of the most polarizing figures in contemporary American politics. As she continues her role in national security, her actions and decisions remain closely watched by both supporters and critics.
