Electricians: The Future-Proof Trade in an Age of Automation

An April 2026 report from the construction scheduling platform Planera found that electricians have only a 14% risk of their jobs being automated. The report, which analyzed over 55 manual professions, also noted that the demand for electricians is expected to grow, with over 80,000 new positions anticipated nationally through 2026. This growth is attributed to aging infrastructure, the expansion of EV charging networks, and the transition to new energy sources. The report highlighted the irony that the AI data centers, which are driving automation fears, require electricians for their construction and maintenance, making the profession "as future-proof as a job can get."

In other news, Post Electric, a licensed electrical contractor in Southwest Missouri, has expanded its services to include home automation and smart technology integration. The company has seen increased demand for these services and has invested in advanced diagnostic equipment and technical expertise to meet the needs of homeowners, particularly those with older properties requiring electrical system upgrades. The expanded services include whole-home electrical assessments, panel upgrades, dedicated circuit installations, and the integration of smart home devices.

Additionally, a field trip for the Chariho Career and Technical Center's Electrical Technology class to ProSystems Integration, an automation company in Westerly, Rhode Island, showcased career opportunities in the industrial side of the electrical field. The students learned about the variety of systems designed for different applications, from medical tubing equipment to automated systems for major brands like Hershey Chocolate and Krispy Kreme. The visit aimed to expose students to the industrial automation sector, an area often overlooked in traditional electrical training programs.
