Electricians Face Just 14% Automation Risk as Demand Surges for AI, EV, and Renewable Energy Infrastructure

An April 2026 report from the construction scheduling platform Planera found that electricians have only a 14% risk of their jobs being automated. This is due to the high demand for electricians to build and maintain the infrastructure needed for AI data centers, electric vehicle charging networks, and the transition to renewable energy. The report notes that there is a shortage of electricians that is expected to worsen through 2026, with over 80,000 new positions expected to be created nationally.

A field trip by the Chariho Career and Technical Center's Electrical Technology class to ProSystems Integration, an automation company in Westerly, Rhode Island, highlighted the growing opportunities for electricians in the industrial automation sector. The company's owner, John Brunelle, and his son, Jesse, an engineer at the company, explained to the students that while the machinery itself hasn't changed much, the controls are updated every three to five years, creating a constant need for skilled electricians who can work with the latest technology.
