Electricians Among Most Secure Jobs in AI Era, Report Finds

An April 2026 report from the construction scheduling platform Planera found that electricians have only a 14% risk of their jobs being automated. This low risk, combined with a growing demand for their skills, makes it one of the most secure professions in the age of AI. The report highlights that the very data centers powering artificial intelligence require electricians for their construction and maintenance, creating a strong, ongoing demand. This trend is further supported by the need for electricians to upgrade aging infrastructure, build out EV charging networks, and facilitate the transition to new energy sources. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a need for over 80,000 new electricians by 2026.

The same report identified several other professions with a low risk of automation, including emergency medical technicians (7%), firefighters (9%), healthcare social workers (12%), and police officers (13%). These roles, like that of an electrician, require a high degree of human judgment, adaptability, and in-person interaction, making them difficult to automate.

In contrast, the report found that jobs in agriculture, production, and retail have a much higher risk of automation, with some roles facing a risk as high as 99%. This is because these jobs often involve repetitive and process-driven tasks that are more easily automated.
