Chariho Electrical Technology students explore careers in industrial automation

Students from Chariho Career and Technical Center's Electrical Technology class visited ProSystems Integration, an automation company in Westerly, to learn about career opportunities in the industrial side of the electrical field. The tour was led by Jesse Brunelle, a Chariho alumnus and engineer at the company, and his father, John Brunelle, the company's president. They showcased various machines and explained the customer-driven nature of the industry, with projects ranging from medical tubing equipment to control systems for the Mystic River Bascule Bridge. The goal was to expose students to the industrial automation sector, which is often overlooked in traditional electrical training.

Level Automation has successfully migrated from the Simatic S7-1200 to the new generation Simatic S7-1200 G2 control system. The migration process, which was expected to be complex, was completed in just two minutes using a new migration tool in the TIA Portal. The new system is certified according to the IEC 62443 cybersecurity standard, making it compliant with the NIS2 Directive. This upgrade positions Level Automation at the forefront of the industry, ready to meet the increased cybersecurity requirements for socially important activities.

Jobs AI can’t replace yet: What a new report finds

A new report from Planera, a construction scheduling platform, indicates that while many manual and physical professions are at high risk of automation, several sectors remain heavily reliant on human skills. Emergency services, social services, and healthcare have the lowest automation risk, at 11%, 12%, and 16% respectively. In contrast, agriculture, production, and utilities face automation risks of 89%, 82%, and 81%. The report highlights that jobs requiring human judgment, empathy, and real-time decision-making, such as emergency medical technicians (7% risk) and firefighters (9% risk), are the least likely to be automated. Interestingly, electricians also have a low automation risk of 14% and are in high demand, partly due to the construction and maintenance of AI data centers.
