Chariho Career and Technical Center's Electrical Technology class took a field trip to ProSystems Integration, an automation company in Westerly, to learn about career opportunities in industrial automation. The visit was organized by Jesse Brunelle, a Chariho alumnus and engineer at the company, who wanted to expose students to a side of the electrical industry beyond residential and commercial work. Students toured the facility, learned about the custom-designed systems for various industries, and spoke with engineers about their day-to-day work. The instructor, Ryan Northup, emphasized the importance of such real-world experiences for providing context and inspiration to the students.
In other news, a recent report from the construction scheduling platform Planera found that electricians have one of the lowest risks of being replaced by AI, at only 14%. The report, which analyzed over 55 manual professions, highlighted the growing demand for electricians, with over 80,000 new positions expected nationally by 2026. This demand is driven by aging infrastructure, the rise of EV charging networks, and the energy transition, including the need for electricians to build and maintain the very AI data centers that are driving automation in other fields. The study concluded that the combination of low automation risk and high demand makes being an electrician a "future-proof" career.
